Architects, House and Home Mah Jongg pendant - Upcycled Antique bone and bamboo FREE SHIPPING
Description
5 Wan –“Fang”Represented by the symbol of a HOUSE and meaning any building – a HOME, place of business, offices, school or hospital. A good tile for ARCHITECTS, DECORATORS and those working in CONSTRUCTION. The symbol represents a physical building rather than an organization.
80 years old Antique tile strung on adjustable waxed cotton cord with purple foiled and gloss black glass beads. Purple beads has small specks of teal inside. This tile comes from a set made for the asian market, as it does not have the numeral "5" on it. Adjustable cord has sliding knots so you can adjust it to suit your neckline. 29 3/4” long, can be adjusted to choker size on the average neck. First photo is of the necklace you will receive.
Tile measures 1" by 3/4" or 26mm by 19 mm. Any imperfections are due to wear from use. The history of the pieces only add to their charm, old is beautiful. Other photos display the variety of: tile sizes, bamboo color, bamboo grain, the dovetailed joint that connects the bone and bamboo, and the sliding knots.
CUSTOMIZING: You can request a focal bead in a different color. The adjustable cord can be switched for a longer or shorter length. If you would prefer a set length instead of the adjustable knots, convo us the length and we will crimp ends onto the cord and add a spring ring clasp. Men like our necklaces too, and we often take the colored beads off, leaving only the black for those less adventurous males.
INTRODUCTORY SPECIAL - Until Jan 1st 2010 - FREE SHIPPING IN NORTH AMERICA! Reduced shipping for International.
HISTORY OF MAH JONGG
Mah Jongg is a Chinese card game(the tiles are the cards)developed in Ningbo, in the middle of the 19th century. Some claim it is even older as it borrows from games that can be traced back as far as 960 A.D. At the beginning of the 20th century Mah Jongg was introduced to westerners living in Shanghai and became so popular that they spread it to North America and Europe. 1923 was the peak of the Mah Jongg craze, when the largest amount of Mah Jongg sets were imported to the United States.
The Mah Jongg tiles we use in our jewellery are UPCYCLED from incomplete sets 40-90 years old. Mah Jongg tiles are made from a variety of materials, but we prefer the beautiful tiles made of bone and bamboo dovetailed together. The bone in the tiles is from cattle, we do not buy ivory. Most of the designs in the bone have been cut by hand with carving tools, and then painted, or filled with pigments. Since the tiles are old and come from sets that have been played with many times, there can be slight miscolourations and wear. We carefully clean the tiles, and repair with woodglue any tiles that have dried out and come apart.
