NEARLY EDIBLE 2 oz of handpulled roving balls from handcarded handdyed down WOOL fiber for spinning

"Nearly Edible Wool" for handspinners
(handwashed, picked, kool-aid dyed, handcarded, handpulled Dorset-cross two-tone roving balls--a bit over 2 ounces per "lot" of several balls)

Most of this wool is from Dorset-cross sheep local to me from my friend Jane. Some of it is from a Suffolk sheep that another friend sent to me. Both of these are Down-breed sheep and I've confused some of which was which, but they are very similar. Neither of these types of wool are very good wet-felters, so keep that in mind when planning your project.

Each ball is from wool that I washed by hand with dishwashing detergent (nothing harsh or scary) in small batches. It still has some of the lanolin in it. Half of the wool was then dyed with Kool Aid (Berry Punch for the blue, Orange, Strawberry & Grape). The koolaid is non-toxic and washfast (although it is not totally LIGHTfast), as the dye binds with the proteins in the wool. The wool was then hand-carded and one white rolag and one colored rolag were layered together and pulled into a two-tone roving. Each ball is about the size of a fist and each 2 ounce "lot" has six to eight balls of different colors in it. I have 4 "lots" of these balls.

Some people do not think too highly of down breed sheep's wool for handspinning and knitting, but I find it quite pleasant to work with. It has a reputation of being very springy. It is fairly soft but it does not have much luster. I knitted a shawl with this same wool (dyed with the same colors, but not pulled into two-tone rovings.
