Azores - Aqua Blue Apatite Earrings

Description

Natural apatite, as vividly, impossibly blue as the ocean off the Azores.

For these earrings, I twined tiny briolettes of natural apatite up shining 14k gold filled chains.

The briolettes range in size from 2 to 4mm long, and have a remarkable coloration. Always azure, but in different lights they show every variation of that color; as changeable as the sea. They are semi-opaque, and some have slight, silklike inclusions.

I've wrapped each stone in 24k gold vermeil, and suspended it from a dainty chain of 14k gold filled wire. The chains are arranged in staggered tiers, to give the stones extra sparkle and sway.


The earrings fall about 1.25 inches (3.12cm) long, from the tops of 14k gold filled post closures.

All of the apatite is natural and untreated. I can never believe that a color this vivid comes straight out of the ground that way, but it really does.
