Clover cup, Honeycomb

4”h x 5 3/4”l x 4 1/4”d; holds 10 oz.

A soft, satin yellow with a glossy interior version of the same.

I first made this cup shape while at a residency in Denmark in 2003. They were a spin-off to the Corset Series I developed. They also came about because making my ornate, stamped cups around beautifully, minimal Danish design felt odd. I haven’t made this form for almost three years, so it’s nice to have it back in inventory; an option a little softer in style and surface.

I throw these on the potter’s wheel and then alter the form by running my finger up the outside of the wall in four places which creates a clover shape to the cup and lip, thus the name. The handles I make (two pieces) are hand-pulled, formed and added. I also decorate with slip-trailing, dots and/or swirls --the clay version of cake decorating. No molds are used!

The undulation from the altering and relief of the slip creates a wonderfully soft and tactile surface. Daily elegance that will shape your morning coffee or tea into a clover shape.

Elegant and intended for your use and enjoyment much like Grandma’s dishes. Handmade pottery can need (and happily, deserves) a little more love to prolong its life than contemporary manufactured ware, so while durable and microwavable, hand washing is recommended. Do not pour boiling, stovetop water directly into handmade ware. “Pre-warming” pieces by filling with warm/hot tap water prior to pouring hot water for coffee or tea is recommended.

The clay and glazes are lead-free and food safe.
