Ruddigore or the Witch's Curse - Gilbert and Sullivan Book Illustration by Lucille Corcos
Description
Taken from the broken book the "Illustrated Treasury of Gilbert and Sullivan" (1940).Lucille Corcos was a noted illustrator and practitioner of the American “modern primitivist” trend whose career began about 1929. Her work was witty, colorful, and very popular even though she willfully ignored conventions of perspective and scale.
Corcos trained at the Art Students League in New York City and she produced several illustrated children’s books and subsequently illustrations for Vanity Fair magazine. She exhibited widely from the mid 1930s on at venues including the Whitney Biennial, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the British Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the National Academy of Design.
This page has some edge wear and signs of its age, but is generally in very good condition. It would look superb framed for the operetta lover in your life. The colors are bright and the effect is busy, jolly and joyous.
This page has some slight staining on the right margin (see scan).
This is an original book page from the 1940s, not a reproduction, and not the original artwork for the book illustration either!
Size overall is 11 3/4 inches (height) by 8 3/4 (width)
