Description

I made up this textile collar necklace as I went, using crochet, knit, and weaving, with a variety of soft and fluffy natural fibers. It's a cross between a neck warmer and a necklace, and it looks cute with either a scoop neck or a jewel neck collared shirt. With a scoop neck, the collar looks like a necklace. With a jewel neck, the collar sits over the top of the neckline, and looks like its part of the top. The colors include black, cranberry, purple, blue, gray, and pink. The button is a combination of crochet and seed bead weaving of my own design with a large rhinestone button set in metal in the middle. I also decorated the surface a bit with some glass seed beads in matte grey/green and dark blue, plus some purple lined clear glass beads and some shiny blue ones. I love the way it is both fancy and cozy. Dark, jewel-toned colors update a classic look found in the Victorian style. The rich and natural fibers make it look like modern lace, sort of.

My mother has always been an avid knitter, and she's made me drawers full of sweaters over the years. Everything she makes has some little detail or doodle, often in the collar or cuffs. When I wear these sweaters inside a jacket, the fancy details still show, which I love. Since I already make jewelry, I thought it would be fun to design fancy collars and cuffs like my mom's, but without the whole sweater. That way, I can just focus on the details, my favorite part. I weave with so many wonderful yarns and threads, many from my mom's overflowing collection of remnants. I experiment with all kinds of stitches and tricks with my needles and hooks. Each piece is a unique exploration in color and texture. I have even been playing with different ways to add beads to the surface, using a combination of crochet and weaving.

I especially love working with silk and cotton, so this piece contains stripes of each. The nylon thread is only inside of the seed beads on the button, so it won't touch your skin.

The collar is tapered to lay well on a neck, and you can wear it with the button in the front for a traditional look, off to the side for a modern look, or in the back. The shorter edge, which would sit near the base of your neck, measures almost 17 inches clasped. The collar is over 2 inches wide. Hand wash in cold, pat in towel, line dry or dry flat on a cookie sheet. As long as you don't wring it out too hard, it should look the same after washing.
