A gemstone chain of natural sapphires in shades of deep ocean and midnight blue, gleaming on handmade 14k gold-filled links.

For this simple necklace, I carefully chose a handful of natural Australian sapphire rondelles in blues so deep that they are nearly black. Most of the sapphires I work with are faceted, to catch the light. These are polished as smooth as river pebbles, which I think enhances their rather mysterious colors. They are an absolute delight to touch.

The rondelles are slightly graduated in size, from 2 to 4mm around. They are semi-opaque, with some inclusions. Each rondelle has been individually hand-wrapped in 14 karat gold-filled wire, and linked to form a princess-length chain.

The necklace measures 17 inches (42.5 cm) long, and is finished with a 14 karat gold-filled filigree locking clasp.

Australia, already famous for its incomparable opals, is quietly making a name as a source for sapphires. It is especially known for its dark blues.
