Lucy loved tasty afternoon snacks, preferably ones she caught herself. The crunchy, fluttery, flying snacks were her favorite. Lucy enjoyed a bit of workout before committing to her meal, chasing her prey all over the living room. Bounding after it in great leaps that brought her skidding across the kitchen linoleum, only to end up with her nose pressed against the patio screen door. Most of the time the prey got away, and Lucy had to satisfy her hunger with dry crunchies left by the humans in pretty red bowls on the floor, just for her. They were as delicious as fluttery, flying snacks but much more still. Not as much fun.
In fact the only way Lucy Hayes, expert Siamese cat prey chaser, could get those human provided treats to move even the tiniest little bit was to scoop them out of the shiny red bowl with her dark paw. She'd examine it carefully, blue eyes almost crossing as she stared hard at the quiet treat, before finally dropping it to the floor. Sometimes when it landed, the little brown crunchie jumped and skittered away. Usually not far, but just enough to whet Lucy's hunter instincts and have her leaping at it, gleaming white points of teeth bared as she mewed in delight and slapped at the crunchie...inevitably sending it spinning across the floor and under the big white cold box.
Humans would walk by and chuckle, to find Lucy flattened to the cool floor with her nose pressed under the box, paw reaching under and struggling to snag the elusive crunchie prey. Sure there were plenty of snacks left in the bowl, but the one she really wanted was the sneaky one that had the wit to try and hide from Lucy.
Fluttery, flying snacks and dry crunchies aside the thing Lucy wanted most desperately to taste were the spots on the ceiling and wall. Beautiful, rainbow colored spots that appeared randomly, blinking on and off on the wall on the sunniest of days. Warm breezes fluttering the living room curtains, foreign outdoor scents carried inside, exciting Lucy with their mysteries. All the while pretty little spots, impossible to catch, blinked on and off the walls.
Once Lucy had done a thorough check of the room, deciding if she couldn't leap against the walls to catch those spots with out being yelled at and scolded by the humans, then at least she could figure out where they were getting in. Then she would wait... A low throaty purr rumbled from her chest as she imagined gobbling up pretty little rainbow spots as they sneaked inside, one by delicious one.
On that spot exploration day, Lucy had found herself wandering along the window ledge, nimbly stepping past the big crystal hunk the humans put there, inconvenient location if you asked Lucy. If it wasn't there she could stretch out full length and drowse in the hot sunlight pouring through the window while she kept her eyes on those spots on the wall.
One dark little paw carefully swept the crystal off the sill. A lot happened then, the spots suddenly raced across the wall. Lucy's heart leapt and so did she. Diving across the room to see where they went. The humans called out, their big clumsy feet thundered across the floor. They tsked and tsked and fussed with the crystal, finally carrying it away to another room.
Lucy was tempted to follow, but a curious thing had happened. The spots were gone. Completely. She sat and swiveled her head, craning to see all the room at once, but not a single rainbow spot was left. Lucy meowed, a cry of questioning. "Meeow? Meeeeeeeeow? MEOW MEOW MEOW." She liked to talk, though the humans were slow to understand. Often petting her head when she asked for food, giving her food when she asked for pettings...or worse, 'shhhh-ing' her when she asked to be left alone to hunt rainbow spots.
Lucy Hayes, Siamese cat, prey hunter expert, sighed. The spots were good and gone, it would be dry, lifeless crunchies for snack time again.
She gave up the fine feline art of trying to stare at the ceiling whilst looking like she wasn't staring, and padded away. Past the shiny red bowl full of treats, until she was nose to door with the white box. Perhaps the crunchie that had cleverly hidden itself away under there was ready to come out and be eaten.
Lucy flopped down on her belly and meowed again, "Meeeeeooooooow." A sort of feline call of warning to future meals, 'beware ye who are about to be eaten.'
She stuffed her paw under the fridge and began batting it, tugging out interesting clumps of dirt and hair balls. She hoped she got the crunchie, it wasn't a rainbow spot that could mysteriously enter and disappear, but it was something.
