EIGHTEEN: Nearly witching hour

“All right. Let’s think this through. Harry said to put him back.” Blackthorn paced around the zombie, who still stood, statue-like, looking rather wistful. “Could we take him back to his grave and nail the coffin shut and bind it with chains and…”

Laluna shook her head, gaping, horrified. “He’d be awake for eternity, then, trapped, muttering Samantha’s name.”

“Ah. No good, then.” Blackthorn tilted his head, examining Leon thoughtfully. “I wonder if he’s like a vampire. You know, just needs to be decapitated and…”

“BLACKTHORN,” said Laluna, even more horrified. The vampire was smiling, teeth bared, but fell silent.

“Stars, and moons and galaxies.” Laluna cradled her head in her hands. “I haven’t the faintest idea how to fix this. Oh – what time is it?”

Blackthorn glanced down the road at the church clock tower. “Eleven-thirty.”

“Nearly witching hour,” she breathed. “If I’m missed at the High Witches’ Ball, do you know what will happen?”

“No,” admitted Blackthorn, interested.

“My license will be revoked.”

“What license?”

“My Witchery license.” Laluna began to bite a fingernail. “And that means that I’ll have to close Ye Olde Potions, and that means that I’ll have disappointed my grandmother, and her grandmother, and her grandmother…”

“Who says you’re not going to the ball?” Blackthorn proffered her his hand. “I’ll watch Leon, and you can go.”

“You don’t understand.” She stared at his fingers for a long moment before clasping them with her own. His skin felt cold but comforting. He helped her to her feet as if she were made of feathers. “What has been done tonight can only be undone tonight… If we fail to undo the spell now, it will remain in place forever.”

“Huh.”

They both turned to look at Leon, still standing, still staring, still smiling. Laluna shivered, not from the temperature.
