TWENTY-ONE: Beyond the otherworldly

It took longer than anticipated to climb all three hundred steps, and by the time she’d reached the bell tower, she had one hand gripping the cupcakes precariously and the other clutching her tight-laced corset. She should never have worn it, she thought ruefully, as she began to make a circle around the bell. Silly fashion, and trying to keep up with it. Breathless, she ran right into Blackthorn as she came back around the bell, face colliding with his chest. She inhaled sharply, and the scent of leather and stardust made her head spin in dizzy loops. She apologized and backed away into the shadows, hiding her flushed cheeks.

“Fancy running into you here,” he smiled, smoothing down his cape.

“Why are we here?” she asked him, wearily. She could hear Leon making his shuffling way up the steps, zombie moans preceding him. It would have been frightening if she couldn’t translate his swearing.

“We are here to talk with that guy.” Blackthorn pointed to a tiny stone gargoyle perched at the edge of the bell tower.

“Oh.” Exhausted and desperate, Laluna was open to anything, however silly. So she stepped up to the gargoyle, waved a hand in front of its unmoving eyes and whispered, “Hello? Can you hear us?”
