TWENTY-TWO: Wake the gargoyle

The gargoyle’s back was turned to the pair, but when she addressed it, it swiveled, revealing its sour cat face. Much to Laluna’s amazement, it opened its sculpted eyes and blinked at her. It was made of stone (perhaps marble) but moved like an animal. It had the face of a cat, the body of a bird and the feet of a bear. Its wings hung, cloaked over its back, much like those of an angel, but its demeanor was hardly angelic.

“Of course I can hear you, girl,” it croaked in a tone of gravel. “What could you possibly want? I was sleeping.”

“I apologize,” said Laluna, looking to Blackthorn. He merely shook his head and smiled. “But, you see…well, we’re looking for Death.”

“…and since you are, noble gargoyle, the oldest object, thing, person in our village, we thought you might be able to help us find him,” added Blackthorn smoothly. He could charm the teeth off a serpent, mused Laluna, stubbornly ignoring the racing palpitations of her own heart. Still…she couldn’t help wondering how the vampire felt about her. Was she just a friend to him? A pal? Did he only hang out with her for her cupcakes? Or was there maybe, possibly…perhaps something more…?
