TWENTY-THREE: She charmed the gargoyle

The gargoyle cleared its throat (which sounded like rocks being tumbled together), and, after a moment, Laluna realized it was preening itself. She chuckled but silenced quickly when it glared at her.

“Perhaps I know of Death, perhaps I know not… What would you give me for such an answer?”

Blackthorn and Laluna exchanged glances, and then Blackthorn stared pointedly at her tray of cupcakes. She wrinkled her brow. “No, I can’t. What will I take to the witches?” she asked, but the vampire simply shrugged.

“Will you make it to the ball at all if we don’t take care of HIM first?” he jabbed his finger at Leon, lumbering up the last few stairs. The zombie still had the mourning wreath ringed around his neck, and he was still moaning softly. If Laluna concentrated, she could make out the melody of an old marriage song in his hum.

She sighed, resigned.

“Would you take a lemon cupcake with violet icing and sprinkled with candied violets?” she asked the gargoyle, smiling prettily. A wide-toothed grin was the only answer required, and she placed the pastry right in front of its stone paws.

“In the mouth, girly,” the gargoyle demanded impatiently, and — biting her lip — she dropped the sweet into eager stone jaws.
