TWENTY-FOUR: This otherworldly light

It chewed for what seemed like ages, as the vampire, witch and zombie watched expectantly, and when it was done, it fluttered its eyes with bliss. “Delightful…sinfully delightful. But,” it said, licking its lips. “I cannot help you.”

“But you SAID you would!” Laluna was hot with anger. The gargoyle continued to smile.

“I said that I cannot help you…but I know who might be able to. The stone angel in the cemetery at the edge of town was created from the same quarry as me, but an hour earlier. She is the oldest…thing in the village, and if she does not know Death, no one else does.”

“A stone angel? She is a statue and can’t …” began Laluna testily, but she fell silent when the gargoyle glared at her again. “Oh. Well. Yes. I suppose, on All Hallow’s Eve, she might…”

“All Hallow’s Eve, my left foot! She can speak at any time, if you ask her nicely enough. As can I, though if this is the thanks I get…”

“Sorry, sorry,” said Blackthorn, leading them all back from the disgruntled stone creature. “Thanks ever so much for the information!”

“Welcome,” it grumbled, and — as they made their way (slowly and with poor balance, in Leon’s case) down the stairs, he called after them, “Don’t be strangers! A cupcake would make my day, if you thought to bring one on occasion!”
