TWENTY-FIVE: The deepest heart of the graveyard

The town was not very large, and it did not take long for them to reach the cemetery on the edge of it. Leon stared longingly at his empty grave, and that’s where they left him for the moment, gazing into the dark hole of it. Laluna could not help it – she felt her heart breaking with guilt, but she screwed up her courage, and together, Blackthorn and she found the deepest heart of the graveyard, and there waited the stone angel.

“I do not think,” Laluna said slowly, staring up at the lovely winged woman towering overhead, “that she’s ever spoken a day in her life…”

“Beg pardon?” the statue twisted a massive head toward her and bent down. Laluna took several steps backward, nearly stumbling.

“Sorry, madam,” she stammered, as Blackthorn chuckled. “Um. We were sent by the gargoyle atop the church…”

“Maddening little fellow, isn’t he?” asked the angel, smiling. “Never shuts up.”

“…Right,” said Laluna, frowning and trying to gather her thoughts. “Can you help us? He said that he did not know where we could find Death, but that you might.”

The angel gazed off at the gravestones below her for a very long moment. Then she said, truthfully, “I am sorry, child. I do not know where to find Death. The only thing I might know is who might know…”

“Can you tell us?” Laluna asked in one quick breath. The angel gazed down at her as one might regard a cute romping kitten.
