TWENTY-SEVEN: Quest for a ghost

Together, the three headed towards Blackthorn’s castle. It was really just an oversized house, but the two small parapets had given it enough credibility to be called “castle” by the last mayor of the town. It had eighteen rooms, but Laluna had never seen any of them. Blackthorn’s parents never saw eye-to-eye with Grandmother Nell, and Blackthorn and Laluna were more of less forbidden from seeing one another. They always managed to do it, anyway, hanging out with Harry in the cemetery and coming up with nefarious nighttime plots that involved apples and the town well. Laluna smiled at her memories as Blackthorn invited her through the front door and into the great hall.

It was a very nice place, and Laluna told him as much, holding her cupcakes unsteadily in tiring arms. It wouldn’t do to get frosting on this lovely imported carpet.

“Old Tom!” Blackthorn called into the darkened house. “Are you here?”

“I was just about to go out… It’s the Witching Hour, my boy!” And there was Old Tom, looking gaunt and see-through in the hallway. He wore a tweed suit and had a monocle against one eye, which he was forever adjusting. Laluna curtsied.

An argument seemed to die upon his lips after spotting the witch. He took one of her hands in his ghostly grasp and kissed it, smiling. “My dear, I do apologize. I did not see you there…”

“Tom,” she began, then, coughing a little, said, “Sir Tom, could you please help us? We are looking for Death. We asked the gargoyle at the church, and the stone angel in the graveyard, and the angel said that only you might know where Death is.”
