TWENTY-NINE: There was a ghost of a cupcake

“If I…if I eat one of the cupcakes,” the vampire began slowly, smile spreading fully over his features, “wouldn’t that create…a ghost cupcake?”

“That is the singular most ridiculous thing –“

“Couldn’t he try?” asked Tom wistfully, and Laluna shook her head.

“For the love of Pluto,” she muttered, handing Blackthorn one of her last cupcakes. He ate it in two bites and licked his gloved fingers with relish. She sighed.

“Blackthorn, there is no ghost cupcake, and that was a horrid excuse to try and…”

“Wait,” breathed Blackthorn, and then he pointed to the mantel in the hall. There, sitting upon it on a lovely, transparent bit of china, was the cupcake. Tom drifted over to it and took it in both his hands, most lovingly.

“Oh, it has been too long,” he murmured, devouring it a bit messily with a dreamy look upon his phantom face. Laluna shuddered and swore she would no longer be disbelieving about anything. After the ghost finished eating the cupcake, he, too licked his fingers clean and then smiled.

“I will help you, dear girl. That is the best thing I have ever eaten. You have quite the talent.”

“Thank you,” she murmured faintly. Blackthorn would not stop grinning. She couldn’t help smiling a little, too.
