THIRTY: The night is passing quickly

“At the edge of the town, there is the swamp,” said Tom, nodding his head in its direction. “If you go to the edge of the swamp, there is a very old tree.”

“I remember that tree,” said Laluna. “We used to swing on its branches when we were little.”

“Well,” said Tom, obviously pleased. “If you go there tonight, you’ll meet Death.”

But…” The witch stared at him, surprised. “Is it really so simple?”

“Quite,” he nodded. “Go and see, go and see! The night is passing quickly, my dear, and you do not have much time to waste.” He indicated Leon, who was standing, the picture of patience, in the corner of the hall. “What happened to that poor chap, anyway?”

“It’s a little too complicated to explain,” said Blackthorn, “but thanks for the help, old Tom!”

“Anytime, anytime!” he called out after them as they left the castle. “I’d always welcome more cupcakes, nice meeting you…” and the door slammed shut behind them.
