THIRTY-ONE: The ghosts spin as if dancing

“Oh, Blackthorn, there will be nothing at that tree.” Laluna held the remaining cupcakes close to her chest upon the tray, her face glum. “This has all been for nothing.”

“So close to the end, and you’d give up now? Where’s that sass I love so much?” Blackthorn took her arm gently and steered her toward the edge of town. If she had not been so sad or angry at herself, she might have noticed that he stayed quite close to her, and when she tripped, he caught her before she could fall. He gazed down at the witch with an unreadable expression, though I may hazard a guess that it was quite kindly, and almost—if I may spoil so much—loving.

Leon trailed along behind, mumbling about flowers and Samantha, and if Laluna had been translating diligently, she might have also heard something about “brains.”

They finally reached the edges of the swamp. There, in the dark confines of tree and vine glowed will-o-the-wisps. As all manner of creatures and beasts were rejoicing on this All Soul’s Night, so were the creatures and beasts of the swamp. A stray will-o-the-wisp glided up to Laluna and Blackthorn, a globe of light at head-height, and bobbed up and down in front of them as if dancing. Laluna smiled, in spite of herself, and curtsied to the thing, which began to glow fiercer. Blackthorn steered her around it, and then they all stood before the tree.
