THIRTY-SEVEN: Through the earth, beyond

The journey was long but effortless, and Laluna found that Leon could keep up with her easily. He didn’t say much as they made their way down, down, into the earth, only mumbled from time to time, repeating Samantha’s name. Every time he spoke, Laluna’s heart broke a little more, so that once the stairs were evened out, and they were walking through a long, stone corridor, she didn’t know if she could bear the guilt anymore. But the corridor grew wider, until it was a tunnel through the earth, and then it grew wider still, until it seemed the entire village could fit across its length, and even the tree of Death would have been dwarfed by this expansiveness. And still they continued as the lights faded, dimmer and dimmer, and the corridor chilled, colder and colder.

Laluna stopped, heart beating hard, in the barely lit space, and Leon collided against her back. “Sorry,” she whispered to him, and he mumbled an apology back to her. “I thought I heard something…”

Another sound, as if gigantic paws were padding towards them, and then Laluna looked up and up and up as three heads came into view, gigantic heads suspended upon gigantic necks that met at a single body. It was a great three-headed dog, and it was snarling at the two of them, lips up and over teeth as long as her forearm. She breathed in and out and realized, suddenly, that she would probably die in the land of the Dead. The irony did not escape her.
