FORTY-ONE: Autumn was falling away

Laluna was bone-achingly weary, but she still had far to go before she could enjoy a moment of peace…or sleep. So she turned on her shiny black heels (a little dusty from the events of the evening) and began the long climb out of the land of the Dead. The three-headed dog offered her a little bow as she passed, and she could not help but smile at it. Er, them. Finally, there were only a few steps more, and she put her hand upon the door…and it swung open.

As she stumbled out of the tree, she gulped in lungfuls of fresh air and almost fell to her knees, but Blackthorn was there, and she held onto his arm as the world sped up and whirled away from her. She held her hand to her head for a long moment. Things began to steady. There was a light in the far eastern edge of the sky, and she observed it with a sigh. Almost morning.

“Leon?” asked Blackthorn, a single word holding the question of an entire evening.

She nodded, still watching the light. “It’s all fixed,” she said quietly. “All better.”
