FORTY-TWO: The far eastern edge of the sky

What was not spoken between them was the fact that, really, it wasn’t all better. Not for Laluna. In the space of one night, she had taken her family’s legacy and let the winds of fate twist it, pummel it and spirit it away into the darkness. Vampire and witch did not speak of this as they strolled toward the city. Leon was safe. They took comfort in that.

As they passed the graveyard, Laluna paused. “We should thank Tom and the angel, if we can,” she said, and they walked through the graves as morning mist began to rise, always ahead of the sun. There was the angel, in the heart of the cemetery, but in front of her were two milky figures that Laluna could not quite make out. It wasn’t until she was almost upon them that Laluna’s heart skipped a beat, and she ran the final two or three paces and was soon on her knees before one of the ghosts.
