FORTY-SIX: Into the new morning

“Honey, did you even read the will?” Laluna continued to stare, and then her grandmother was laughing, great, big peals of laughter, like bell-song, that echoed off the headstones around them and into the new morning. “If you’d read the will, then you would have known that my wish wasn’t for you to be a witch,” said Grandmother Nell, smile wide and joyful. “It was to be a great surprise… I wanted you to open your cupcakery.”

Laluna stared at her, and then swallowed. Their past conversations came back with thunderous force, and she wondered how she could possibly have been so ridiculous as to assume that her grandmother wanted her to do that which her grandmother knew —without doubt — was not meant for her. Laluna began to cry, not for the first time that morning…but this time, they were tears of joy.
