The Fez -- a brimless, cone-shaped, flat-topped hat made of wool felt. The "Shriner's" version of the fez is just one of its forms, in a traditional red. It had different names and shapes in medieval Persia, Egypt and Turkey.

My fezzes are unique and different, since I added ear flaps, kinda like mutton chops (pun intended). Being Norwegian, we have a history of boiling wool, so fulling came naturally to me.

"Pink Void": Deep pink fleck knit and black cashmere wool combine in a solid, feminine fez. Two panels of a tightly-fulled soft men's cashmere sweater frame the temples. Front and back panels are from a Halston vest I'll never wear again, and include the bottom ribbing as the fez brim. Bright contrast curly serging of magenta and black threads join the panels and outline the brim.

The ear flaps are from the pink wool, which has fun flecks of grey and black scattered about, and edged one side magenta and the other side black. The crown is the same black wool as the side panels. The crown curls in & out, in a very unfezlike profile, outlined by the pink and black threads. This fez is pretty solid so that the ear flaps are more like mutton chops than floppy bunny ears.

I serged together "fulled" wool, cut from knitted sweaters, with contrasting and complementary threads. Each of these is unique, one-of-a-kind, since the final wool directed the fez's shape and size. I'm quite excited about my design, since the first two I made were bought right off my head!

Amazingly, men love them, and I've sold most at fairs. The guys gravitate to them, and choose the brightest among them. This one, tho, I think they'll leave alone!

fits most women's heads.
(mine is a medium size 7 [22" (56 cm)] around above the ears, and it fits quite nicely, but could fit larger heads.

Fulling : the process of melding and shrinking an already knitted or woven article. Felt is made from raw wool that has not been woven. I fulled the knits myself, from older sweaters (mostly), in a hot detergent wash, so they are probably almost sterile!

And of course my entire home is smoke-free, but I do have one kitty. She doesn't sleep on the hats, but she's been around on the floor while I cut and sew.
