Magpies seem to be jacks of all trades scavengers, predators and pest-destroyers, they have a challenging, almost arrogant attitude and are fond of bright objects and this one has stolen my gold ring... little bugger!

One magpie is said to be bad luck unless you salute him and say "Hello Mr Magpie", there are lots of magpie rhymes, the one I was taught growing up is this one:

One for sorrow,
Two for joy,
Three for a girl,
Four for a boy,
Five for silver,
Six for gold,
Seven for a secret never to be told.

But my nan remebers it this way:

One for sorrow
Two for mirth
Three for a funeral
Four for a birth
Five for heaven
Six for hell
Seven's the Devil his own self
