amber and russet falling scroll painting
Description
acrylic, graphite & inkon flash spun high density polyethylene fiber
5 by 2 feet
anodized aluminum frame
this painting is from my latest body of work, which are reinventions of japanese kakejiku (hung scrolls) in modern materials: acrylic, graphite and ink on flash spun high density polyethylene fiber "rice paper."
like their muromachi era (1336-1537) counterparts, these scrolls are vehicles to display poetry, painting and or calligraphy, intended to be hung against a wall to help set a mood matching an occasion or season.
and like their traditional counterparts, my themes are similarly of local plants, flowers and animals, but less formal, and more of a tangled log of my wanderings.
this particular scroll painting is one impression of hiking during the west coast's understated autumn, as oppose to new england's conspicuousness during the same time.
it was exhibited in my august show at the kaleid gallery
in san jose, california.
it is a large alla prima painting "framed," that is hung, in black anodized aluminum. these scrolls hang by a single common nail, which i include.
