For thousands of years, the aromatic gum resins of east Africa, Frankincense and Myrrh,have been harvested by humankind and burned as incense to promote spiritual well-being and awareness. They were used in Egypt, Greece and Rome, and are most renowned as two of the gifts that the wise men bestowed upon Jesus at his birth. Because of this, Frankincense and Myrrh are associated with Christmas and Winter Solstice celebrations.

Resin incense such as this is traditionally burned with charcoal in a small ceramic bowl. Resins do not burn or smolder on their own and need to be warmed with either charcoal tablets or coals from a small fire.

You can mix Frankincense and Myrrh resins with other fragrant herbs and spices, seeds, or roots to create different fragrant blends. Good companions for these resins include sandalwood, rosemary, and cedar.
