yellow iris scroll painting
Description
acrylic, graphite & inkon flash spun high density polyethylene fiber
5 by 2 feet
anodized aluminum frame
this painting is from my latest body of work, which are reinventions of japanese kakejiku (hung scrolls) in modern materials: acrylic, graphite and ink on flash spun high density polyethylene fiber "rice paper."
like their muromachi era (1336-1537) counterparts, these scrolls are vehicles to display poetry, painting and or calligraphy, intended to be hung against a wall to help set a mood matching an occasion or season.
and like their traditional counterparts, my themes are similarly of local plants, flowers and animals, but less formal, and more of a tangled log of my wanderings.
this painting was inspired by a casual sunday excursion with friends through picchetti ranch open space preserve (santa cruz mountains). cameras and sketchbooks filled with bugs, inchworms, lizards and wildflowers—even dried cicada shells. snacks by a babbling brook at the winery completed the hike.
it was exhibited in my august show at the kaleid gallery
in san jose, california.
it is a large alla prima painting "framed," that is hung, in black anodized aluminum. these scrolls hang by a single common nail, which i include.
