The 60’s were a movement of freedom of expression. It was not, however, limited to just the voice of the hippies. Gay liberation saw its birth in the streets of New York City when over 2,000 protested the unfair policies of the police when a local gay club in the Village was raided. The march took place in the heart of Greenwich Village along Christopher Street and became known as the ‘Christopher Street Liberation’. In memory of the first uprising expressing gay liberation, celebrations have become worldwide observed every last Saturday of June since 1970.
