Anna's Prayer
Description
The quote that I used for this design, I originally saw on an 1808 sampler. After a tiny bit of research, I discovered that the words are part of a poem called Address to the Deity by Anna Laetitia Barbauld, published along with a collection of her other poems in 1825. I do not consider myself to be an expert on old samplers, but I would imagine that the poems and phrases that the girls chose to embellish their work (or perhaps chosen by their teachers) were often taken from the popular poetry of the day.The flower bouquet was designed both in form and color composition after a crewel work potholder from the late 1700’s. I can’t imagine putting so much effort into a cloth that was destined for scorching, but given the nicely preserved state of the original, it appears that the owner shared my sentiment!
