Miniature Journal, Brown Vintage Leather
Description
I designed this one of a kind little journal to seem an ancient mysterious book. The leather I used for the covers is old, provenient from a little bag I was lucky to find on a fair in Bucharest. The covers are brown, made from the flap over part of the bag.This was the actual preservation state of the leather: a bit scuffed but in very good condition. I made a preventive consolidation on the leather and treated it with special products to enhance its flexibility.
I painted the front cover with a geometrical decoration which reminds me of the mysterious symbols found in old books. The first page is also painted with a symbol.
The spine was designed to resemble a real book cover; the relief was obtained with many little strips of leather underneath the dark brown one that covers it. I then painted the reliefs with brown paint to accentuate them and to create the beautiful repetitive motif on the spine. The leather that covers the spine comes from a vintage coat. The decoration was made with black and brown-red leather paints.
The binding is longstich, made with strong linen thread.
The book is made of 9 signatures and has a total of 108 pages (216 sides) of recycled paper which I stained with coffee, tea and ink as well as I could to reproduce the impression of an old paper. The paper has 80 gr / m2 (~21 lb), is hand torn and will work for writing in dry media and ink.
The book measures 7.2 x 10.8 cm (2.8 x 4.3 inches).
