Description

Exactly one pound of rose rocks, hand gathered by ME! And a little help from the kids, who will get a share of the sale.

25 individual barite roses. The ones in the top picture are the ones you will receive, all of them! The colors vary between a reddish tan and a terra cotta color. The small ones are just under an inch while the largest is about two inches across. There are plenty here to share or resell.

I live fairly close to Noble, Oklahoma, the only place these unique structures are formed. Every now and then I go and dig up a bucket or two, getting covered by red sand in the process.

This batch has good specimens, each one with distinct "petals". Some are better than others, but they are all considered okay by collectors. These are not museum specimen grade because those all "grow" on private property and I can't collect there.

The area where these are found is shrinking due to development. There are many rose rocks now at the bottom of Lake Stanley Draper and Lake Thunderbird, manmade reservoirs. The postal training center is built on a bed 30 feet thick of rose rocks. Housing additions and apartment complexes are paving over many of the open fields where once you could pay a fee to go in and collect by the carload. There are still some areas to be collected, but the "good" sites are getting very hard to find these days. This quality for sale is some of the better stuff coming out of public land these days.

Barite roses are an evaporite, formed when the Permian sea was drying up a brazillian years ago. Large ponds of barite and iron-rich sand interacted to form the crystals which grow in this rose-like formation. Barium crystals are usually square, but the iron creates a charge that keeps the end from squaring off, making it round instead. I could get more scientific about it but if you are interested in these, there's plenty of info online.

They are neat to look at and some of the rose rock suppliers used to glue them on little metal stems for bouquets. If you look really hard you might find some of these brass and barite sculptures still today, but the couple who makes them is very old and don't get out of Noble, OK much. If you travel through Oklahoma you can buy rose rocks at the travel center, but other than that these are very hard to find outside of Oklahoma.

About 40 years ago someone who had a rose rock "ranch" made up a story about Indian warriors going off to battle and getting killed, and their tears fell to earth and formed rose rocks. So therefore the mystic magickkkk property of rose rocks is strength and love. Since this was a marketing ploy designed to attract new agers, I don't really hold a lot of stock in that legend, its historical accuracy being way off for one and the cheese factor for another.

Barite is mined in its non-rosy form for the radiology industry. Barium is often given to patients so doctors can X-ray the digestive tract.

In terms of chakra and crystal healing lore, metaphysical properties, I would say that rose rocks govern the root chakra and the digestive system. They are full of iron and that means energy. These are neat to hold and play with. I consider them very useful for attraction spells because of the iron, attract anything from energy to money to people. They can also help you "see" things you normally wouldn't be able to, so they would be good for spells designed to reveal hidden things. You can also hold them while meditating on something that just isn't quite coming into focus.

I would match this stone with the Hanged Man in the Tarot.

Shipping is by priority mail so I can pack them in a very sturdy box with bubble wrap.
