Atalanta - Artisan Necklace of Smoke-Fired Clay and Driftwood (3074)

Description

Incorporating natural elements with a handcrafted artisan focal by Kristie Roeder (aka artisanclay), Atalanta has a look that's earthy and exotic at the same time.

When I received this beautiful smoke-fired clay donut from Kristie, I immediately knew I wanted something in the piece to mimic the pale lines in the donut (the result of Kristie's special firing process). I used three narrow strips of peyote to suspend the donut from the peyote band that wraps around a piece of driftwood carefully culled from the shores of Lake Michigan. To let more of the wood show through, I left some gaps in the underside of the band. There's another tiny piece of driftwood incorporated into one of the necklace portions to add balance to the composition.

Color was one of the big questions with this one. I love the colors in the donut, but I wanted something that would complement and contrast with the muted tones rather than something that would blend with them. I opted to use dark red matte delicas for all of the beadwoven components of the piece.

The name of this piece, Atalanta, is Greek and means "equal in weight."

Atalanta measures approximately 22" (56cm) around (each neckpiece is 10" long). The pendant portion, which includes the driftwood pieces and the cab, is 5" (13cm) wide and 3" (7.5cm) tall. The smoke-fired clay donut is 2" (51mm) in diameter. The closure is a beadwoven loop and a small smoke-fired clay bead (also by Kristie). The driftwood pieces were all carefully cleaned and have multiple coats of satin acrylic to protect them and bring out their natural beauty and color.
