Sassafras Votive Holder

Description

This votive candle holder is made of dark stoneware clay fired to cone 6. The cup section that holds the votive is glazed with a glossy, brown blue glaze. This glaze accentuates the throw marks on the bottom of the holder and there is a nice blue ring.

The holder stands 2 and 1/8 inches tall. The rim spans 5 and 1/2 inches across. The interior base measures 1 and 3/4 inches across. The exterior base measures 2 and 5/8 inches across.

The rim and exterior are texturized with real leaves. The clay was then painted and rubbed with an oxide to intensify the veins of the leaves. The leaves impressions are of sassafras, joe pye weed, red maple, wild grape, cinnamon fern, forsythia, nettle, peony, virgin's bower, wild rose, sumac, skunk meadow rue, and intermediate wood fern.

This holder is discounted due to a tiny chip on the foot. During the final firing it was sitting on a tiny drop of melted glaze and upon removal from the kiln, the drop of glaze took a piece of the foot off. The chip measures 1/16th of an inch and is not visible when the holder is upright.
