Chicago - mixed media sketch on paper
Description
This is a mixed media painting on grey Rives BFK paper. It is a self-portrait. The piece measures 5.5" x 11.5".I first applied gesso the the paper to protect it from the oil paint. I then drew in pencil and colored the background with bright yellow watercolor crayon. I painted the face with oils.
I love Chicago. It is the Great Midwestern City. I grew up about 6 hours south of Chicago, and coming from Indiana meant always going through Gary and Hammond to get there. When I think of "city", I think of steel mills, flames, vast water, impossibly tall buildings, screeching commuter trains, the smell of sulfur, horrible accents, and the danger of going a block in the wrong direction - addictive, and I do miss it. The last place we lived before moving to Washington was in northwestern Indiana, about an hour from the city.
It is hard to think of Seattle as a "city".
The reason that this painting is called "Chicago" is I was wearing a Chicago Lithuanian Festival t-shirt in the sketch.
I am planning to paint a series, on canvas or panel, of these elongated Chicago images. Watch for them.
