Vintage 1950's Blue Reindeer MARY MAXIM Wool Cardigan Sweater XS

Adorable handknit 1950s novelty reindeer and pine tree cardigan sweater made from the famous Mary Maxim pattern. Made of heavy wool yarn with a handstitched lining and the buttonholes were hand-stitched as well. Probably made by someone's loving grandmother in the mid 1950s.

Great colors on this one: vivid French blue, with a cherry red and white pattern of large reindeers and pine trees on the front, sleeves, and the back.

Reindeer sweaters were enormously popular during the 50s and are very difficult to find now. Mary Maxim became famous for their bulky and warm sweater patterns depicting North American wildlife, but reindeers were by far the most popular.

I love that this one's thick and warm, and yet fits close to the body.

Label: None - completely handmade from an identifiable Mary Maxim pattern
Era: Mid 1950s
Color/s: Rich French blue, off white, true red
Fabric: Wool yarn, probably rayon acetate lining
Fastenings: White shell buttons down the front
Size marked: N/A. It was made as a boy's sweater (buttons are on the right side), but will fit an extra small or U.S. size 2 woman well. It's a little too tight on my U.S. size 4/6 French form.

The Measurements: 35 inches bust, 17 shoulder to shoulder, 22.5 sleeves, 22.5 mid shoulder to hem.

The Condition: Very good. Freshly hand washed and conditioned, lining steamed. No flaws on the sweater itself, but two of the shell buttons have a couple of nicks (see last photo), and I just noticed center back near the neck of the lining has a pinhead size hole. Didn't get a shot of that. Happily are minor issues :)
