RENEWAL Sterling Silver Earrings with Russian Serpentine

As a special donation, over 100% of the proceeds - 85% of the sale price - of this item will be donated to charity.

This is a lovely pair of earrings made entirely out of natural 4mm dark green Russian serpentine. They are delicate and add a nice finish to what you're wearing without being obtrusive. These earrings are suspended on very nice sterling silver fishhooks, and all told are 1¾" long.

The charity that will be benefitted by the sale of this item is The Nature Conservancy. In their own words, The Nature Conservancy is, “a leading conservation organization working around the world to protect ecologically important lands and waters for nature and people. Since our founding in 1951 we have protected more than 119 million acres of land and 5,000 miles of rivers worldwide - and we operate more than 100 marine conservation projects globally. We have more than one million members. We work in all 50 states and more than 30 countries - protecting habitats from grasslands to coral reefs, from Australia to Alaska to Zambia. We address threats to conservation involving climate change, fire, fresh water, forests, invasive species, and marine ecosystems. We use a science-based approach, aided by our more than 700 staff scientists, and we pursue non-confrontational, pragmatic solutions to conservation challenges.”

Specifically, our donation will be financing the planting of 50 trees in the Atlantic Forest in Brazil. The Atlantic Forest in considered one of the world’s most endangered forests, because it is being threatened from so many sides: coastal development, urban expansion, agriculture, ranching, and illegal logging. The Atlantic Forest provides clean water and hydro-energy to 120 million people in Brazil. Also, the Atlantic Forest is the source of an incredible range of biodiversity, including 23 species of primates, 1,000 species of birds, and 20,000 species of plants (and counting – more continue to be discovered). Many of these species are found nowhere else on earth, and if this rainforest is destroyed, humanity will lose the chance to study and possibly develop new medicines from these plants. The Nature Conservancy is, in their own words, “Working with local partners to bring the Atlantic Forest back from the brink – restoring 2.5 million acres [that is, nearly 4,000 square miles] of land and planting 1 billion trees over the next seven years.” This incredibly expansive and magnanimous project, as can be imagined, has required the world to join together to work to save this rainforest, and we would like to do a little to help with this project by raising the money to finance the planting of 50 trees.

(By the way, for the art history-minded, the painting used as a background in the first picture is a detail from Charles Collins' 1851 painting "Convent Thoughts".)

"Our planet, the Earth, is, as far as we know, unique in the universe. It contains life. Even in its most barren stretches, there are animals. Around the equator, where those two essentials for life, sunshine and moisture, are most abundant, great forests grow. And here plants and animals proliferate in such numbers that we still have not even named all the different species. Here, animals and plants, insects and birds, mammals and man live together in intimate and complex communities, each dependent on one another."
David Attenborough
