8x10 Amaterasu Print

Description

8x10 hand embellished print of my original painting of the Japanese Shinto goddess Amaterasu.

Amaterasu is the beautiful goddess of the sun and the most powerful of the Shinto pantheon. After her brother the storm god causes terribe harm she retreats into a cave and none of the gods and goddess can draw her out. They try singing and calling to her but to no avail, all is dark and Amaterasu remained hidden. Finally the Uzume the goddess of mirth comes and starts a rather funny and lurid dance and the thousands of gathered gods and goddesses burst into laughter and this is what lures Amaterasu out of the darkness, and with her comes the dawn!

I fell in love with this tale of healing through laughter and this painting was the result.

Painted in 2007 in watercolor and gold textural paint.. I have hand embellished the print with gold relief paint to give extra dimension and glimmer to her crown. No two will be just alike.
