SEA GROTTO - Button Necklace of Vintage Abalone and Mother of Pearl





As the high tides recede the secret natural seashore grotto is revealed in all it's splendor, fissured limestone cave walls encrusted with all manner of sparkling shell and populated by watery nymphs.......






This new design is a combination of dark silver abalone buttons and larger mother of pearl shell buttons of incredible iridescent color, the backs being natural shell with lots of green. These particular creamy ivory larger buttons represent some of the most colorful I have ever found in vintage buttons. All the buttons in this design are never used and new, old supplier stock that date from the mid 1900's. The colors of the iridescent nacre flash subtle shades of the underwater rainbow in pinks, golden yellow, purples and hints of green and blue, impossible to show completely in a photo. The beauty of these old buttons is revealed in the individual character, color and imperfections of the natural shell these buttons are made of.

This particular design can be worn a variety of ways as shown in the photos. When flipped over the natural shell is showcased with lots of beautiful greens. These buttons have a nice weight to them and lay nicely on your neckline. Wear this piece casual or more dressy with equal flare. All my necklaces are strung on strong beading cord so they are not going to break.


This necklace will come to you carefully wrapped and tucked into a handmade fabric pouch fastened with a vintage or antique button.


Length measured around the complete loop as it encircles your neck - 30 inches (76.20 cm)
Ivory shell buttons are 11/16 inch (1.75 cm)
Dark silver abalone buttons 1/2 inch (1/27 cm)
