Madame Bovary jacket (grey)

Description

This is a gorgeous little jacket that nips in at the waist and has pintuck detailing to create a bubble shape. The high neck adds some drama as do the puffy sleeves, sinched in with a cuff.

This piece was inspired by the Spanish women who came to Lima after the conquest of the Americas. Women who came in search of a life of riches and power and who often found themselves alone while their husbands travelled in search of fame and fortune. Women who asked for a divorce and were granted it, an act of defiance and bravery unheard of for those times. These divorced women, alone in a place where everything was still being defined, had to find a wealthy or generous relative to take them in either to their homes or to the convents. If no such benefactor appeared, the divorcees were put in a home for women, where they were forced to share their lives with other 'superfluous' women of society such as concubines (often the very reason for the divorces) and prostitutes.
