This is a drop spindle for hand spinning yarn with a gorgeous blue sandstone (aka blue goldstone) whorl. The shaft is carved lignum vitae, (also known as ironwood) with a heavy gold filled hook which I hand bend, set, and then file smooth forming a graceful, balanced curve.Lignum Vitae is the hardest wood known and actually SINKS in water.
