In my never ending quest to create the ultimate handmade pincushion, I took a little survey to find out the most desirable qualities in a pincushion. The top 5 were:

1. Large - room for lots and lots of pins
2. Heavy - so it doesn't move or tip over
3. Not too deep - so needles don't get buried inside
4. Lots of sections - for sorting different types of pins
and needles
5. Stuffed with materials that will sharpen,clean, shine
and condition your pins.

So, keeping all of that in mind, I decided to put a new twist on an old favorite. Here is the result. The classic tomato pincushion, Love Laurie style! The first change I made is the shape....I made it wider and flatter so there is lots of surface area for storage, and, no more buried needles. Second, the black emery sand that is usually found in the little strawberry is now in the tomato. These approx. 4.75 inch round and 1.5 inch high tomato pancakes are the largest emery pincushions I have seen yet. Each one is stuffed tightly with over 1 full cup of pure emery sand. Weighing in at over 13 0z., this pincushion isn't going anyplace you don't want it to! Just like the original, the sections of the tomato can be used to keep different types of pins and needles sorted. Each pincushion is covered twice to prevent the emery sand from seeping out. The top of this one is made with cranberry and green paisley cotton fabric with coordinating green on green cotton fabric on the bottom. The inside pouch is heavy white cotton.

I stuffed the attached strawberry with lanolin rich wool to condition your pins and needles and help them to glide in and out of your fabric like butter. It's the perfect place to store your sewing needles.

As with all Love Laurie Products, a touch of whimsy is a must. Each tomato pancake comes with a sewing quote on a pin. This one says "Blessed are the children of the piecemakers for they shall inherit the quilts!". If you would like to choose a different quote or want to make up your own, just let me know in the notes to seller. The list of available quotes is in the 3rd photo.

Every component has been either machine or hand stitched. There is never any glue used on my pincushions!
