My Great Grandfather defected to England around 1880. I was always told by my grandmother that I have his eyes. He has long held a fascination for me and was the first memento mori piece I ever made about 4 years ago and so a lot of my work documents this period in history. Are you sitting comfortably? Then let's go on an adventure...

I was lucky enough to get tickets and go to the London Docklands Jack The Ripper exhibition. A few months later I was sitting in my little shop making up a Saucy Jacky bracelet and a man came through the door. We exchanged hellos and he asked if he could see one of my Ripper pieces in the cabinet. We started chatting and ended up discussing The Ripper story for about an hour. When he left he told me he had written a book on The Ripper murders that I might be interested in. He said next time he was in town he would drop a copy in to the shop for me.

I thought nothing of it until some months later when he strode past the window and waved he popped his head in and said he was waiting for some more copies from his publishers and would drop one in as soon as they arrived. Meanwhile it was hurricane season and I had booked a well earned week away surfing with the girls. Whilst I was away the gentleman dropped a copy of the book into the shop and he had kindly signed it for me. When I saw it on the counter I realised the gentleman was none other than Alan Moore the author of the graphic novel From Hell. All things come full circle.

These earrings are part of a collection that is dedicated that magical autumn when I read the graphic novel which through coincidence found it's way into my little shop and the gentleman in the charm depicts Sir William Gull - are you sitting comfortably then I shall begin...

Prince Albert was the son of Queen Victoria. He gained a rather saucy reputation as a playboy and was always up to cunning stunts such as hiding foxy young actresses in his tent whilst he was in the army and embarking on a string of affairs not least of which with one Alice Keppel who is Camilla Parker-Bowles' great grandmother (Camilla is now married to Prince Charles our future King of England). Phew! What a randy bunch the British royals are...

Where was I.... ah yes, Prince Albert was known as Bertie to the family throughout his life. His son Prince Eddy was a possible Jack the Ripper suspect. Allegedly Sir William Gull the Royal surgeon was also in the frame for the White Chapel Murders. So the story goes Prince Eddy's mother asked a well-known artist of the period to act as a mentor to the sensitive Prince - Mr. Walter Sickert. He introduced Prince Eddy to a 'shop girl' called Annie Elizabeth Crook. They started having an affair fell in love and got married in secret, it is claimed. This scandal could bring down the monarchy, as a child born of the royal line may have been able to lay claim to the throne.

Apparently Annie was declared insane and in order to make her 'disappear' committed to an asylum for the rest of her natural, meanwhile Alice their illegitimate daughter ended up in the care of one Mary Kelly who was a friend of Walter Sickert. Supposedly Mary and her 'friends' were going to blackmail the government using their knowledge of Prince Eddy's secret marriage. Prince Eddy was a Freemason as was his father and Sir William Gull and as they protect their own they closed ranks deciding the only way out was to silence these women for ever - Jack the Ripper was born and so as they say the rest is history....

The earrings are made with sterling silver safety catches and silver plated (on brass) charm cups. They will arrive beautifully boxed and wrapped ready for giving or simply keeping.
