200 grams Space-Dyed Handspun Recycled Banana Fiber Yarn, 180 Yards

This listing consists of two skeins of premium handspun recycled banana fiber yarn. Each skein weighs about 100 grams and is 90 - 100 yards, for a total of 200 grams (7 ounces). Recycled banana fiber yarn is similar in appearance to recycled silk yarn, in fact it is often called banana silk. However, it does not contain any silk fiber – it is made from banana trees, using sustainable methods that do not harm the tree. Banana fiber is used in Nepal and India to make cheap woven fabric. This yarn was made by a women’s collective in Nepal that collects banana fabric waste from textile factories, hand-spins it into yarn, and hand-dyes it. Your purchase helps these women escape poverty and educate their children.

You will find two types of banana fiber yarn in my shop, space-dyed and very multi-colored. The space-dyed banana yarn (including this listing) is spun from white fiber and then dyed, whereas the large multi-colored skeins are spun from colored banana fiber. The space-dyed skeins generally have less twist and are a bit fuzzier than the multi-colored skeins.

Because it is handspun, the thickness and twist of this yarn vary slightly throughout the skein. I recommend handwashing separately in cold water with a gentle detergent; it may not be completely colorfast, especially the first time it is washed.
