Description

18th Century

Museum replication of an English Great Coat.
French & Indian war - American Revolution
1720's - 1780's

~Hand sewn~

Reproduced from Museum pieces created to fit your measurements. This sale is not for the pictured coat, but for one designed specifically for you. I have a variety of colors. I use only Melton wool cloth 24oz yd for these coats to ensure warmth.

This coat is constructed correctly with 0 to 3 capes at the shoulder for maximum rain proofing and warmth. The collar is made to stand up on those cold nights on sentry and patrol. Being unlined makes for easier wear over wool frock coats and regimental uniform. The coat is double breasted for the most dashing figure. You have your pick of Brass or Pewter buttons please specify in a convo. with me. 3 buttons are on each sleeve. They are working and the cuffs can be folded down to cover ones hands. 8 buttons are on the front, 4 of them working. The double breast is simply for looks. This coat also has 2 working pockets (each deep enough to 'transport' a bottle of wine or other libation)with one working button each. The pockets are located at the sides of the coat.

You can see in the last photo 2 men sitting with their guns and dogs, a great coat is hanging on the wall in the background. From an 18th century artist.

It is documented for these coats being made from various colors of wool please also tell me what color is needed for your jacket. Please remember that historically they were made from darker colors of material. I may need to order in the wool so please understand this takes time. If you need the jacket for a specific event please tell me before so I am able to adjust for this time restraint.
Black, Greys, Blues, Browns, Dk Green.

The great coat is the outer most garment in an 18th centurys man's wardrobe. It was worn over a man's frock coat for warmth in foul weather and winter. The Great coat is a larger version of a frock coat with capes at the shoulder, a large collar and deep cuffs. The fabrics used would most always have been a heavy Melton wool cloth, generally felted to waterproof the fabric. The length can reach from somewhere about knee to mid calf. For ease of movement the coat is only buttoned to the waist. This garment would have been worn over a man's entire dress consisting of shirt, waist coat, frock coat (or regimental), neck stock, breeches, socks, and shoes. The Great coat is documented to have 0-3 capes and can be made to your wishes.-please see my other auctions these items. If not there please contact me and I will make one up-

The Great coat is a good all-around garment for a reenactor who understands the temperature drop of summer nights in the field. The jacket will be useful to those of you who go on to do encampments and have manual labor need something warm and easy to wear in the cold, early mornings before coffee.

I have found this item being sold on many other supply sites for 236USD and above. These other jackets are not lined, are machine sewn, nor are they double breasted.

Please contact me for shipping for this item.

This Coat is hand sewn. Please see my other auctions for a cheaper machine sewn version.

This garment is not a staple, but is very useful during rainy encampments. I would have killed for one during the Citadel Hill encampment of 2006. I also know it would have useful at Ticonderoga in 2008.

*I need approx 3 months to make this item, so order in advance. If you need this item sooner, please convo me and see if it can be accomplished.
