reusable sandwich wrapper (modernist picnic print)
Description
oh how i love finding new prints for these sandwich wrappers, and this here's the latest.the traditional red checks with little flowers picnic or italian restaurant tablecloth print -- but in grey. so cool.
you pack a sandwich for lunch on a regular or at least semi-regular basis and you use a disposable plastic sandwich bag and you feel a little guilty about it every time. you try to wash out those ziplock bags and reuse them, but it doesnt always work out that way, because a gob of peanut butter gets stuck in a corner or you just plain dont feel like it. get one of these instead! it's way more pretty and way more cool and way easier.
you wrap your sandwich up like you're swaddling it in a blanket or tucking it into an envelope. there's a hook and eye on the inside closures to keep it snug and then the other part is adjustable -- fold the flaps to fit your sandwich. and wrap the elastic over the buttons to keep it closed. at lunch time, you've got a placemat on which to rest your sammy between bites. when you're finished, wipe it off with a damp cloth (or all out wash it in the sink if your sandwich was really messy) and it's ready to be used again the next day. awesome, right?
the sandwich wrap is made of two layers of durable oilcloth-like material sewn together. the edges are pretty pretty scallop cut. the buttons are vintage (**please note: the buttons on your wrapper will be different than those in the photographs! i'm now using little white vintage buttons on this print. but don't worry, they look great, i just havent had time to photograph the new ones.) the elastic is a simple common hair elastic (new and unused, of course!) -- easy to replace if you lose it. (and i'll send you an extra, just in case!)
i tried these with tinier-than-usual bread and i tried them with extra-large slices of fancy bakery bread -- both fit. the corners naturally fold over themselves so everything is containted inside! (i'll vouch for pb and j's being safe to carry without worrying about messy spills. if your sandwich is REALLY juicy, though, i might suggest using the sandwich wrap and then putting the whole thing into another lunch sack. -- but for your usual ham and cheeses or mozzarella and tomato sandwiches this is totally great.)
the wrappers are adjustable, so if your sandwich is teeny, just fold one of the outside flaps under and bring the buttons closer, wrapping the elastic around twice (or three times). if your sandwich is really large, turn it the other way so that it fits under the hook and eye on the inside flap and then when you close the outside flaps, the buttons will be further away from one another but it'll all still be contained.
*yes, that is a fake sammy in the product photos, but dont worry -- it's tried and true to work with the real thing! i just dont always have real sandwich fixin's on hand, so i made up this fake one to use for the photos.
okay -- that's it. there are more photos of these in action (and the story behind them) on my blog: chezsucrechez.blogspot.com
