Blossom Necklace -- Handfelted, Shibori, Wool

Not your typical necklace! This collar was free-form felted by hand from a blend of differently textured green wools and embellished with green freshwater pearls and a stunning, frilly flower. The process of freeform felting feels very organic to me and I think the necklace speaks to that through its unexpected juxtaposition of textures and lush, raw edges. White tencel fibers add just the right touch of sheen and create a marbled effect. (Tencel is a fiber made from wood pulp cellulose).

To create the bubble-like texture, I used a Japanese technique called Shibori. Shibori originally referred to creating patterns on cloth by pleating/folding/stitching and then dyeing it. For this piece, I focused on texture instead of dyeing by wrapping the wool around marbles and pebbles and then exposing it to friction. Once the pebbles were removed, the wool kept their imprints.

The necklace seamlessly blends from a collar to a hand-rolled felt chord (with a button closure) that goes around the back of your neck.

Whole piece: approximately 19" (48 cm) long
Collar front: approximately 9" (23 cm) long; 3" (8 cm) wide
Chord: approximately10" (25 cm) long
