Description

Every year I make a different molecule ornament. Since I am a huge gingerbread fan (especially with a cup of quality jasmine green tea), this year I chose zingerone. It is made of lead-free pewter and can be hung on a tree, in a window, at your lab bench, or even from your rear-view car mirror.

Ginger contains a pungent, spicy-tasting molecule called gingerol, which is a chemical relative to capsaicin, the spicy-hot molecule from chili peppers. When you cook ginger, gingerol transforms into the milder flavored molecule zingerone, a relative of vanillin from vanilla and eugenol from clove. A tuber of a tropical plant, ginger has been cultivated by people for its culinary and medicinal properties for five thousand years.

The ornament is about 2.75 inches (7 cm) long and comes with everything you see in the last photo, including a special zingerone-design pouch (made of organic cotton), a gift box (made of recycled paper), and a little informative card about zingerone and gingerol.

The ornament was designed and modeled by me and cast in lead-free pewter by an artisan in New Mexico. The fabric for the pouch was designed by me, printed by spoonflower.com, and hand-sewn by my mom and me. (Thank you for the help, Mom!)

This is a limited edition for the 2009 holiday season only. It is part of a Mad Scientists of Esty challenge. For other science and holiday themed items from the Mad Scientists, search "msoechallenge" in the "handmade" category.
