"Winter Trees"

A snowy scene of slumbering trees are surrounded by a quiet snowfall in this fused glass art, reminding me of Robert Frost's poem, "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening."

This painting is one of a set of four: "Winter Trees," "Spring Trees," "Summer Trees," and "Autumn Trees."

This piece began when I took a photograph of a strand of trees in the park above Hanamauna Bay on Maui. Looking at the trees, I drew a representation of them on paper, then I lay a piece of clear glass on top and painted the tree trunks and branches with black glass paint.

Transposing the trees from tropical Hawai'i to a winter locale, I "painted" the trees with white frit and created a background of two shades of blue opaque glass and white glass. I fused the entire piece at 1475 degrees.

The wood frame is hand-painted with two coats of blue paint and then coated with a satin polyurethane finish. I nailed a sawtooth hook to the back for easy hanging; a wooden dowel allows you to stand it on a shelf instead.
