Description

This ornament depicts a microscopic radiolarian (called Sepalospyris pagoda by Haeckel) is fit for your wunderkammer, your cabinet of curiosities. This is one of selection of specimens from Natural History are hand-printed onto fabric, hand-sewn on a backing fabric and suspended from a ribbon. Each specimen is a relief print, carved in linoleum. Celebrate your love of science this holiday season!

Radiolarians (or radiolaria) are a type of tiny creature -amoeboid protozoa - which produce mineral skeletons. They occur as zooplankton throughout the oceans and their tiny skeletal remains can be used as diagnostic fossils to date submarine sediments.

My radiolarian ornaments were inspired by the scientific illustrations of famed German biologist Ernst Haeckel (1834 to 1919). His book "Kunstformen der Natur" (Artforms in Nature) helped foster the Victorian mania for cabinets of curiosity and palour microsopy. This is a specimen he identified as Sepalospyris pagoda, but the modern scientific name is Polycystina.

The ornament is about 9 cm or 3.5 inches in size.

The Mad Scientists of Etsy challenge for October is to re-imagine the ornament in a scientific light. This wunderkammer of ornaments is my answer.
