Sale - Rose Red - Petite Thai Ruby Earrings
Description
Ruby, beautifully cut; in that soft, rich red that calls to mind the inner petals of a perfect rose.No wonder this is the stone of romance. The very name evokes passion, love, and beauty. It is a stone that has long been celebrated as the most precious of gems, and the natural fire of a good one cannot be equaled.
For these earrings, I started with two 1 carat teardrop briolettes of Thai ruby. These little stones measure less than 5mm long, are semi-translucent; and have a wonderful fire. I suspended the briolettes from twisted circlets of 24k gold vermeil, for a look that is versatile and effortlessly classic.
The earrings measure just under 1 inch (2.5 cm)long, from 14k gold filled ear posts.
Some things about rubies:
Grading rubies can be a little tricky. Some people believe that the darker the ruby, the better, while others believe just as passionately that the opposite is true.
Historically, the finest rubies are a pure, intense, medium-toned red color known as “pigeon’s blood”. It’s about the same color as a red traffic light. All rubies are primarily graded on their color, with size and shape and “cleanliness” (that is, level of inclusions visible to the eye) being nearly as important. As with sapphires, your personal taste should dictate our choice of stones.
The rubies I used for these earrings are a medium to deep red, and have the slightly pale, silky look sometimes associated gems from the Chanthaburi province of Thailand.
These are natural rubies with no color enhancement and some inclusions. The briolettes, which weigh in at 2.97 carat have an excellent clarity. The rondelles tend to appear slightly more opaque.
Ruby is the red variety of the mineral corundum. All other colors of corundum (including, oddly enough, pink) are known as sapphires. Ruby, as with all corundum, is a very hard and durable stone, very easy to wear and easily cleaned with warm, soapy water.
Ruby is traditionally associated with passionate love, health, and longevity. The ancient Hindus believed that rubies derived their colors from an inextinguishable fire that burned inside the gems. Ruby is the birthstone of July, and is associated with the astrological sign of Capricorn. It is a traditional gift for the 15th and 40th wedding anniversary.
